dcterms.abstract: Pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus, Linnaeus 1758) is a South American cervid, associated with grasslands and savannas; in Argentina this species is listed as “endangered”.
Our aim was to analyze the behavioral responses of the pampas deer to human presence, and to evaluate possible effects of their poaching. We recorded behavioral responses from 382 pampas deer groups during eight vehicle surveys, in “El Centenario” ranch (San Luis Province). Data were analyzed using the G-test of independence and logistic regression.
Almost half of the groups (48.17 percent) remained on site. Behavioral responses differed significantly according to group size and composition and observer distance; being this last the variable most influencing flight, groups were more likely to flee at shorter distances. In return, behavioral responses were independent from habitat type, transect type and season.
Our results suggest certain human tolerance and that consequently, poaching would not have important effects on this population.

dcterms.abstract: A measure D[t1, t2] for the amount of dynamical evolution exhibited by a quantum system during a time interval [t1, t2] is defined in terms of how distinguishable from each other are, on average, the states of the system at different times. We investigate some properties of the measure D showing that, for increasing values of the interval’s duration, the measure quickly reaches an asymptotic value given by the linear entropy of the energy distribution associated with the system’s (pure) quantum state. This leads to the formulation of an entropic variational problem characterizing the quantum states that exhibit the largest amount of dynamical evolution under energy constraints given by the expectation value of the energy.

dcterms.abstract: Fleas (Insecta: Siphonaptera) and mesostigmate mites (Acari: Laelapidae) are common ectoparasitic associates of sigmodontine rodents in the Neotropics of South America. In Argentina, most of the research on ectoparasitic arthropods has been carried out on rodents from Buenos Aires Province (Autino and Lareschi, 1998; Lareschi and Mauri, 1998), while only a few small studies have been done in other areas of the country, such as the northwest (Lareschi et al., 2003a), and the Monte Desert Biome in Mendoza Province (Lareschi et al., 2004). Unfortunately, very little information is available from the region between the Paraná and Uruguay rivers in northeastern Argentina. From Corrientes Province, only the mite Laelaps manguinhosi Fonseca has been reported parasitizing sigmodontine rodents (Lareschi et al., 2001), and no rodent fleas have been reported in the literature. From non-rodents, the mite Androlalaelaps fahrenholzi (Berlese) has been mentioned associated with the marsupial Thylamys pusilla (Desmarest) (Lareschi and Mauri, 1998), and the flea Rhopalopsyllus lutzi (Baker) with the armadillo Dasypus hybridus (Desmarest) (Autino and Lareschi, 1998). In this paper, we present the first faunal inventory of mites and fleas associated with sigmodontine rodents from Corrientes Province, Argentina.

dcterms.abstract: In Argentina, domestic pigs (<em>Sus scrofa</em>Linnaeus 1758) were introduced during the first Buenos Aires foundation, in the year 1536. Their provenance was mainly from the Iberian Peninsula, the Canary Islands and Cape Verde. In 1541 those pigs were released and, consequently, the first feral populations were originated. Thereafter, the species propagated both naturally and through human action, reaching a distribution that covers most of the Argentinian territory. The objective of this study is to genetically characterize the oldest feral pig populations in Argentina, making use of the mitochondrial control region (CR) and the amelogenin gene (AmelY), in order to determine their phylogenetic origin and corroborate its consistency with the historic information. The obtained results indicate that most of the feral pigs in Corrientes and Buenos Aires populations are positioned in the European subclades, E1-A and E1-C for CR, and HY1 and HY2 for AmelY. Despite this fact, a low frequency of individuals of Asian origin was found in populations from Buenos Aires, whereas none of them disclosed African ancestry. Furthermore, given that a large proportion of feral pigs found in the species’ original sites in Argentina have European ancestry, we can partially corroborate the historical records.

Asimismo, este estudio nos permite interpretar aspectos de las prácticas sociales de dichas sociedades cazadoras, recolectoras y pescadoras.; In previous studies we analyzed the patterns of use and consumption of deer, Blastoceros bezoarticus and Ozotoceros dichotomus, by hunter-gatherer-fishermen that inhabited the coastal Río de La Plata River during the Late Holocene.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the practices of deer processing in Las Marías archaeological site (Magdalena County, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina). This site is located in a coastal environment of shell ridges where native forests develop. The radiocarbon dating of Las Marías site (1820 ± 50 yr BP -Pogonia chromis bone-, and 1590 ± 40 yr BP -Lama guanicoe bone-) suggests that the area was occupied since ca. 1800 years BP. For this study various sources of information were combined: archaeofaunal analysis, the information in the texts of chroniclers and the early archaeological work of synthesis, and finally, the analysis of ceramic technology of the site. This work method has allowed visualizing the tendency to practice an intensive use of deer. The intersection of these ways of analysis allows us to interpret aspects of the social practices of these hunter-gatherer–fishermen societies.

The largest Argentine population of Ozotoceros bezoarticus inhabits the semiarid grasslands of south-central San Luis province, a region that has been subject to changes in land use due to cattle ranching and the advance of the agricultural frontier since 1990. We evaluated the use of soybean crop fields by Ozotoceros bezoarticus, by conducting monthly drive counts from June 2006 to August 2007. We also estimated the nutritional quality of soybean and adjacent grasslands. Pampas deer positively selected the soy fields during May-September, coinciding with the winter dormancy period of grasslands suffering hydric stress. This preference could be due to the high percentage of raw protein in this crop compared to neighboring grasslands.
Feeding was the predominant activity of deer within the soy fields (81.9%). Small patches of soy cultures would be beneficial for this O. bezoarticus population, by providing a high protein patch during winter. The possibility of maintaining viable populations in productive fields opens an important way toward their conservation, even in a landscape that includes cultivated lands and size-restricted areas within a matrix of natural and exotic grasslands.
